VIDEO: An expert look at vintage posters

Sophie Churcher, vintage poster specialist at Christies, explains why she can't resist their bold graphics

'They capture a moment in time,' says Sophie Churcher, who is passionate about vintage posters and helps to organise the 20/21 Poster sales at Christie's that featured in Homes & Antiques' June issue. Christie's is the only international auction house that deals in vintage posters and with the next sale on 4th June, it's a busy period.

In this short film, Sophie shows some of her favourite posters (they are surprisingly large), including an example that hasn't seen daylight since the 1930s.

Indeed, these icons of advertising history are rarer than you might think. 'Most were destroyed after serving their purpose,' says Sophie. Not only are they beautiful examples of graphic art, if you bid on one at Christies on 4th June (estimates start at £800), you'll be saving a decorative artefact too.

To discover which poster Sophie would have snapped up for her own collection, see our vintage posters feature in Homes & Antiques' June issue, which you can purchase here.
